Heraldry and Blazonry - Lesson 1

Published:
1.6K Views

Description

This is the first lesson to my heraldry and blazonry class at :iconmoonlit-destines:. For those of you who are in my class, please read it carefully! It looks like a great deal of information, but it's much simpler than it looks.

For your homework, please read the bottom section carefully. When you are ready to submit your role-play homework, please put it in the "Classwork" folder. This folder is NOT set to auto-accept! Your homework will have to be approved.

If you have any questions regarding the lesson or the homework, please ask them in the comments below or send me a note!

If you are not a member of my class, your submission will be rejected. However, you may join my class at any time. If you have not done so, you should fill out the Student Registration Form for Moon and Stars Academy and mark that you are taking my class (Heraldry and Blazonry). If you have already filled out the form but did not mark that you are taking my class, you may still join! Just go in and EDIT your student registration form to signify that you are taking my class (a note to me would also be lovely).

A few important notes:
Even though this is for a role-play group, the heraldry and blazonry described here are real! If you're trying to learn about this fascinating (and, in my humble opinion, under-appreciated) subject, this information does apply to the real world. If you know blazonry and see an error that I have made, please point it out to me. I am not perfect, and I would like to make this as accurate as possible.

Also, the wonderful parchment background is a stock image courtesy of :icongeek-stock: and can be found here.

A few mistakes regarding the tinctures :

- Tawny and Brown are actually taken from english heraldry, but it's a long-perpetuated mistake caused by the disparition of heraldry in France following the revolution.
Tawny is actually a light shade of brown originally called Tenné, used for depicting the color of tanned leather. Brown is even darker, and used for bear hide among other uses. It's called Brunatre in french.
- Orange as we know it is a totally distinct yet specific stain, called Orangé : it's especially present in cities of the south of France.
- Other stains, such as Bleu Céleste, Sanguine, Murrey, are also available yet not recognized by several sources. They correspond to sky blue, blood red and dark purple, in comparison to purple that is much lighter than some sources express.
- Furs (Ermine, Vair and variants) also count as tinctures, as a third group.
